Answering questions as truthfully as possible helps to make sure that your insurance coverage is sound.
If the questions are not answered in a reasonably accurate manner, two problems are possible, i.e., a contested policy or a claim denied.
Most, if not all, life insurance policies can be contested by the insurance company if it believes that the application was not completed truthfully. That means it can rescind the policy if it discovers any misrepresentations in the application after the policy is issued. The policy is terminated as if it never existed and the premiums are refunded, less any claims paid. That is not reliable insurance.
Most states limit the contestable period to two years from inception of the policy. However, even if the policy is not rescinded, the insurer can still refuse to pay a claim if it finds that a fraudulent statement was made on the application.
If an applicant claims to be a non-smoker when in fact the applicant is a smoker, that could be construed to be a fraudulent statement. The applicant is taking an action that cheats the insurer out of receiving the higher rates that are charged to smokers because of their average shorter life span. So even if the policy survives the two year contestable period, the death claim may still not be paid if the application is not accurately completed as it should be.
In order to complete the application process, it will be necessary for us to contact you by telephone.
It is important for us to have at least one telephone number that you answer, or is answered for you, so that any other needed information can be obtained and any paramedical exam arranged.
It is not enough to complete a form and then be unable to be contacted. It is also important to return calls or you may find that no coverage will be issued.
